Judge, Jury and executioner
This painting using ‘Punch and Judy’ characters vividly captures the highly publicised and tragic incident involving George Floyd, which transpired in 2020. George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, lost his life in a horrifying manner at the hands of four white police officers, each complicit to varying degrees, with Derek Chauvin being the primary perpetrator.
The horrific ordeal endured by George Floyd lasted an excruciating 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Throughout those agonising moments, he cried out for his mother as he felt his life slipping away, uttering the now-famous words, "I can't breathe."
The gruesome and widely witnessed brutality of this event left a haunting impression on me, akin to witnessing a public lynching. It moved me to create this painting as a tribute to George Floyd's memory.
