Scissors Rained Down

Scissors Rained Down

Scissors Rained Down, inspired by a visit I made to the Imperial War Museum several years ago. They had devoted a space to the Holocaust, where I remember reading that as part of the Nazis' attempt to humiliate Jews, they would find visibly religious Jews with payers, Nazi officers would call up to the German citizens for scissors to cut off their peyos as an act of humiliation. Many Germans obliged by throwing scissors down from their balconies, hence the repeated phrase “scissors rained down from the sky”. Reading about their cruelty had a profound effect on me as has the rising tide of antisemitism.

The "Rabid Obedience" piece was specifically inspired by the fact that Hitler's favourite dogs were German Shepherds. This was apparently due to their obedient natures. These dogs were used in the concentration camps to instil fear and terror. Frighteningly, there is no reasoning with rabid obedience or unreasonable prejudices.
